First published in 1996, EMV is a set of specifications defined by Europay International, Mastercard Worldwide, and Visa to define the standards for smart card transactions.
- Why EMV?
EMV offers a world wide technology standard for chip-based financial transactions. EMV is also designed to significantly improve security features in consumer card payments by providing features that reduce losses that result from counterfeit and lost and stolen cards.
- When is the Deadline?
Visa has stated that the liability shift for Point of Sale International EMV card transactions will go in effect October 1st, 2015. Visa’s targeted date for the ATM liability shift is Q1 2016.
